COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM (CO-OP)
The UTEP Cooperative Education Program provides students with the opportunity to apply their classroom learning to major related employment opportunities. The program offers two work options: alternating and parallel. Students participating in the alternating work option are considered full-time UTEP students while at work; this includes local or out-of-town work assignments. The parallel work option does required that the student be enrolled at the university for additional course work. NATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM
UTEP is a member of the National Student Exchange (NSE) Program which is a consortium of more than 150 state supported colleges and universities. The program offers students the opportunity to broaden their academic and cultural awareness in different geographic settings across the United States, its territories and Canada. Students are able to enroll at a host university for up to one academic year and pay in-state tuition rates.

To qualify a student must be a full-time student at the time of the application and the semester prior to the exchange, have cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5, and be a sophomore or junior at the time of the exchange. Applications for exchanges beginning in the Fall of 2000 or Spring of 2001 are accepted January 15 - February 15, 2000. THE UNIVERSITY HONORS PROGRAM
The University Honors Program is designed for the academically motivated student who seeks an intellectual challenge and a more personal focus in his or her education. The Program provides an environment conducive to intellectual growth through Honors courses, group activities, and interaction in the Honors Lounge, or "home" for Honors students, which is available for study, conversation with other Honors students, and Honors Council meetings.

Honors classes are small, with enrollment limited to 20 students, thus, enabling students and faculty to know one another better. Creative thinking, writing, verbal, and reading skills are emphasized. Each semester a variety of Honors sections are offered at the undergraduate level. These courses can be used to meet requirements for the Bachelor's Degree as well as the University Honors Degree or Certificate. Students with a 3.0 minimum GPA are eligible to enroll in Honors classes which can be found listed in this schedule under Honors Program as well as under the departmental listings. STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES
As a member of the Texas Consortium for Study Abroad, UTEP is able to offer qualified students the possibility of an academic year, a semester or a summer session at universities in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Britain, The Czech Republic, France, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, The Netherlands, Russia, South Africa and Spain. Additional information about other study abroad opportunities for UTEP students is available from the Office of International Programs in the Union East 203. The UTEP Study Abroad Scholarships are awarded through the Office of International programs. This scholarship program is open to all UTEP students with a minimum 2.5 GPA who have completed 30 credit hours. Application deadlines are October 23 for Spring or Summer and March 1 for Summer or Fall. THE UTEP SEMESTER IN RUSSIA, AND UKRAINE
The summer semester is an extension of the UTEP Political Science and History Minors in Russian and Post-communist Studies. In these countries, classes are conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. five days a week. Classes are followed by excursions and field trips to major points of interest. UTEP Credit is awarded upon successful completion of the courses and a post-course tests.

DISTANCE LEARNING AT UTEP
" Connecting Teaching to Learning Both Near and From Afar "

The mission of the Office of Technology Planning and Distance Learning (TPDL) is to provide graduate and undergraduate students, who are unable to take advantage of a traditional class schedule, with appropriate opportunities to participate in the learning process through the use of alternative media and methods for the delivery of instruction. The TPDL office serves as the campus focal point and catalyst for the design, delivery, and evaluation of distance education and works in collaboration with public and private sector institutions to meet the expanding needs for higher education and workforce re-tooling in the region. Staff works with faculty to develop instructional programs that integrate a wide variety of print, face-to-face contact, and electronic communication media for teaching and learning that promotes the cost-effective use of new information media and telecommunication technologies at instructional sites both on and off-campus.

In addition to scheduling and coordinating the use of distance learning facilities across the network service areas and other learning sites, TPDL services include technical support to faculty, staff and students in the design and adaptation of instructional material for distance learning, as well as, training and assistance in the proper use of equipment in the distance learning classrooms. A major effort of the distance learning initiatives at UTEP is focused on supporting faculty and students in the instructional development, implementation, and integration of new media and technology for teaching and learning. Also, TPDL staff provides support to faculty and students during video conferences and periods of multimedia classroom usage. Through TPDL. the UTEP campus is also an active partner of the new University of Texas TeleCampus offering university courses at a distance across the various University of Texas component campuses through a variety of interactive video conferencing, Internet and web-based delivery systems, print, and face-to-face communication. TPDL manages six state-of-the-art Distance Learning Suites located strategically on the UTEP campus. These locations are: College of Education, Room 208; College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Room 237; The Undergraduate Learning Center, Room 338; The Undergraduate Learning Center, Room 110, and The School of Pharmacy, Rooms 207 and B003. There are numerous off-campus receiving sites in and around the City of El Paso area, including the Independent School Districts, Region XIX, the El Paso Community College, the Universidad Autónoma de Ciúdad Juárez, and Ft. INSTITUTE FOR COMMUNITY-BASED TEACHING AND LEARNING
Community Partnership ("CommPart") Courses

The University offers classes that are connected to community organizations and/or public schools. Through this collaboration, students and faculty partner with community activities to complete specific projects or tasks. In these partnerships, students can engage in hands-on, relevant, and deep learning experiences that will respond to community needs.

TUTORING AND LEARNING CENTER

The Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC) provides free academic-support services for all UTEP students. Walk-in or appointment tutoring is available in most academic disciplines, and students can also access tutoring via the phone, fax, or e-mail. State-of-the-art technology and specially trained tutors are available to students with physical and learning disabilities. Peer mentors and counseling interns can provide assistance with academic counseling and planning, and assist in monitoring student progress. The TLC's non-credit classes and workshops encompass study and reading techniques; mathematics; writing; foreign-language conversation; and preparation for the TASP, EXCET, GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL.. Study groups will be organized in courses for which sufficient demand is demonstrated. For those interested in TASP preparation, help is offered in the form of computer-based instruction. A federally funded program, Student Support Services, provides comprehensive personal and academic support from entry to graduation for first generation students who meet federal guidelines. UNIVERSITY COUNSELING CENTER

The University Counseling Center provides a variety of psychological services to the UTEP community. The core of these services is individual, relationship, and group counseling to currently enrolled students. Career counseling is available to assist students with questions relating to choice of major and future career goals. Personal counseling is available for a limited number of sessions to help students overcome personal problems that are interfering with their university experience. The Center also maintains a Student Development Lab, Multi-Media Learning Center, and Resource Library with written, audio-visual, and computer materials on many psychology and personal growth topics. The Counseling Center Internet Home Page, accessible at www.utep.edu/counsel (or through the Student Services Branch of the UTEP Home Page), describes services in more detail and provides links to over 200 mental health resources worldwide. The Center also offers free access to the new DISCOVER computerized occupational and academic decision-making system to assist students in making choices about careers and majors.
